Lira da braccio with historical set up, a faithful reproduction of the instrument by Giovanni Maria da Brescia in the Ashmolean museum, Oxford.

String length: 34cm (playing) & 38.5cm (drones)

Tuning: D d - G g d a d. Two bourdon / drone strings (D d) and five strings (G g d a d) played on the fingerboard. Fully gut strung.

Flat fingerboard and flat(ish) bridge curve to allow chordal playing. Like the original, this instrument does not have a bass bar but retains a soundpost. Bridge designed from iconography.

Woods: One-piece maple back, maple sides, one-piece carved spruce front. Field maple neck, boxwood pegs, ebony veneered fingerboard and tailpiece. Pine resin and linseed oil varnish.
